Trivia: What is the capital of Brazil?
Answer: Brazilia
Did you know that the capital of Brazil is Brasilia? However, some places might argue that the real capital of Brazil is Curitiba. And that’s because some major public services and councils are located there! But this city doesn’t have any high-profile government buildings such as a congress or presidential palace, making it unsuitable for the capital.
Brasilia (officially called the Federative Republic of Brazil) is a country that comprises around half of South America, and it’s located in the Western Hemisphere alongside Argentina. It has borders with every nation found on the continent: Chile, Peru, Colombia, Suriname, Guyana, and Venezuela. On top of that, Brazil has limited access to the Atlantic Ocean, and it’s surrounded by water.
Pedro Cabral discovered Brazil on April 22nd, 1500. At first, exploration started around the 1530s-1540s, which marked the first settlement of Europeans in this area; the Portuguese also landed there (Pau Brasil). By the mid-16th century, Brazil already had significant concessions, and its first capital was established: Salvador.
Salvador remained the capital until 1763 when the Portuguese decided to move to Rio de Janeiro às Salvador was constantly under threat of attacks from nearby nations (mainly French Guiana). Before 1821, the capital was moved back to Salvador, but only for a brief period. In 1822, it was decided that the capital would be moved back to Rio de Janeiro.
After Brazil gained its independence in September of 1822 (Dom Pedro I), the nation’s capital remained in Rio de Janeiro until 1960, when President Jânio Quadros signed a bill that moved the capital to Brasilia.
Brasilia was inaugurated on April 21, 1960, and it’s located in central Brazil (in the state of Goiás). Since its inauguration, Brasilia has become one of South America’s most developed cities, making it an example for many other cities in Brazil.
The climate in Brasilia is typically tropical, with a colder winter that lasts from June to August. The average temperature in the city is 21-22°C which makes it a great place to visit during summertime!
This nation’s economy is mainly based on exports, but the majority of its income also comes from tourism and agriculture. In addition, Brazil is still growing and developing, which means that it’s a good idea to visit the country while its economy is expanding!
