The elected President of the United States lives in the White House, an executive mansion in Washington D.C. The US President is both head of state and head of government, meaning they serve as State Governor and Federal Head of Government under the US Constitution.

The President’s primary responsibility is to enforce federal laws, develop foreign policy, and coordinate relations between the United States and foreign nations. The President is also responsible for negotiating with different government bodies, such as the US Congress or state legislatures.

The White House has been used as the Executive Mansion since John Adams became president in 1801. Before that time, Presidents lived in Philadelphia (the temporary capital city), New York City, and other cities.

Since 1993, the White House and its occupants have been part of an official area called the “White House Historical Association.” This association registers and maintains historic buildings within a square mile in what is now known as President’s Park (located between the Lincoln Memorial and the United States Capitol building). Some past Presidents have donated their private homes as Presidential libraries.

The White House has been the subject of many popular culture references, such as movies and songs. It’s also a major tourist attraction since it’s open for public tours.

The White House was designed by Irish-born James Hoban in the Neoclassical style and is made of white-painted Aquia Creek sandstone. The mansion has 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, and 6 floors.

The White House has been burnt down twice in its history – once by the British during 1812 and a second time by accident in 1817.

Thirty-one presidents have lived in the White House since it was completed in 1801. Two women have served as official hostesses to the President at the White House: Abigail Adams and Edith Roosevelt.

In 1936, Franklin D. Roosevelt officially established The White House when he included it in his Presidential Household Staff executive order.
