Trivia: What animal has big eyes?
Answer: An owl
An owl is a predatory bird with large eyes in the middle of its head. Owls are known to have excellent hearing and night vision. They’re nocturnal creatures, which means they sleep during the day and hunt at night.
They can see six times better than humans in very little light. Their sense of hearing is so acute that they can hunt rodents in the dark.
Owls’ eyes are large, round, and sometimes bulging. They’re fixed in their sockets like humans,’ but they can rotate their heads 270 degrees to help them see an animal that’s very close or behind them.
They also have better depth perception than other birds because each eye can move independently of the other. This allows them to judge distances accurately when they attack their prey. Owls’ eyes are large because light passes through them more quickly than it does with human eyes, helping them see better in low-light conditions.
Many people think owls can turn their heads all the way around because many owl species have flexible necks. However, an owl can’t turn its head as far as it may seem because of the location of its neck muscles and ligaments. The myth that owls can rotate their heads almost entirely probably came from early artists who drew owls inaccurately with their eyes appearing to move independently.
Owls are members of the order Strigiformes, which contain over 200 types of owls. The average lifespan is 4–13 years in the wild and 20+ years in captivity. They eat mainly rodents, insects, fish, and small mammals.
Owls are found almost everywhere except in Antarctica, where there is no land. Their habitats include forests, deserts, grasslands, tundra, mountains, and various other places with trees or rocks for nesting. Some species of owls mate for life, while others choose new partners each year.
Owls produce their offspring in nests made of twigs and lined with feathers. Some species do not build nests at all. Instead, they just lay their eggs on the ground.
