Trivia: What tree do people decorate for Christmas?
Answer: A Christmas tree or a spruce tree.
Every Christmas, it’s been a world tradition to decorate a tree. Whether that’s a live one or not, there will always be a tree that is decorated. This tradition became popular during the 1800s, but it differed from today.
People would decorate their house with apples and berries in those times, which was done for luck to have a great harvest next season. Also, each decoration would have a specific meaning. For example, an apple decoration meant fertility and love, berries signified life, and candles were for warmth and light. Although this tradition is still carried out today, the way trees are decorated changed drastically.
The first Christmas tree was erected in Riga back in 1510, but it wasn’t until three centuries later that people began to decorate trees. In 1809, the first tree was decorated in a house in Riga, and people believed it would bring them luck. By 1841, Christmas trees had become famous throughout Europe, including Germany and Russia.
Many people have a tradition to cut down their own Christmas tree every year, but some do not. Many people buy their trees from a store and decorate them themselves. People may either choose to purchase a real tree or go for an artificial one made out of plastic and metal.
The renowned Christmas tree is known to many as a Spruce tree. This nickname originated from an old Christmas song. A spruce looks very similar to a Christmas tree, so many people started calling it that instead. People called this faster-growing evergreen the “New World Christmas Tree” because it was unknown to them at one point in time.
Today, spruces are still popular and the most widely used Christmas tree type. If this is not your cup of tea and you would like to go for something more traditional, then a Nordmann Fir could be right up your alley.
To have the best-looking tree, decorators usually wait until after Thanksgiving before starting their decoration process. Some people go as far as waiting until after they have finished their Thanksgiving dinner.
